Patio sliders are the most common forced-entry point in Sun Belt homes and the hardest opening to screen properly. The product is not just a wider version of a front-door unit.
Why sliders cost more
Span. A 6-foot or 8-foot opening puts far more load on the frame and the mesh than a 36-inch entry door, so the extrusion has to be heavier and the mesh tension higher.
Hardware. A sliding unit lives or dies on its rollers and track. Cheap rollers bind within a season and the homeowner stops using the screen, which defeats the purpose entirely.
What to specify
Stainless or sealed ball-bearing rollers, not nylon wheels. Ask specifically — this is where budget units cut cost.
A keyed or lockable latch that engages the frame, not just the jamb trim. On a slider the latch is the load path during a pry attempt.
Track drainage if the door faces weather, and an anti-lift block so the panel can't be lifted out of the track.
Retrofit or replace
Most sliding security screens mount into the existing patio door track, which keeps cost down and avoids permitting. That only works if the track is straight and the opening is square.
On older homes with settled openings, a fabricator will often build a sub-frame. It costs more and it's the right call — forcing a panel into an out-of-square track guarantees the roller problem above.

How much does a sliding security screen door cost?
Expect meaningfully more than a standard entry unit — the span, heavier extrusion and track hardware all add cost. Most quotes for a standard 6-foot slider land in the upper half of the local price band, and 8-foot and multi-panel openings are priced by square footage.
Can a security screen fit my existing sliding door?
Usually yes, mounted into the existing track, provided the track is straight and the opening is reasonably square. A good installer measures the diagonals before quoting. One who quotes from a phone photo is guessing.
Will it still let air through?
That's the entire point — a stainless mesh slider gives you a secured, open patio door in summer. Airflow is slightly lower than an insect screen because the wire is thicker, but the difference is small compared to keeping the door shut.
