Doors get the attention, but ground-floor windows are the other half of the opening problem — and the place where 'security screen' is most often used to describe something that isn't one.
What makes a window screen a security screen
The same three things as a door: woven stainless mesh rather than fiberglass or aluminum insect cloth, mechanical clamping rather than a rubber spline, and a frame anchored into structure rather than clipped into the window channel.
If any one of those is missing, you have a strong insect screen. That may be fine — just don't pay security prices for it.
Egress: the constraint people miss
Bedroom windows are required to function as emergency escape and rescue openings. A fixed security screen over one can violate that, and in a fire it is a genuine hazard, not a paperwork problem.
The answer is a quick-release or hinged panel that opens from inside without a key. Any competent installer raises this before you do. One who doesn't should worry you.
Where window screens earn their cost
Ground-floor windows out of street view — side yards and back elevations — are where forced entry actually happens. Screening every window on the house is usually over-buying.
In wildfire zones the calculation changes: ember-resistant mesh on every opening is the point, and the 1/16–1/8 inch aperture requirement applies house-wide.

Can you still open the window?

Do security screens block the view or light?
Less than people expect. The wire is thin and the weave open; from inside during the day the effect is close to a standard screen, slightly darker. From outside, the mesh reads as dark and obscures the interior, which is part of the deterrent.
